This year, Hickey Metal Fabrication Inc. celebrates 80 years in business. It’s just one milestone as the company continues to focus on expansion, innovation and developing future generations of family leadership.

“My husband’s grandfather started it as a heating and roofing company in 1942,” said Suzanne Hickey, corporate secretary and treasurer.  Hickey, the wife of company president and CEO Leo Hickey, said his father entered the business after returning from the service.

By the 1980s, Hickey Metal diversified into metal fabrication at first to support its roofing operations. By the end of that decade, it had expanded its client base representing other industries that required custom metal fabrication services.

“It’s today a vertically integrated company,” Hickey said. “We’re now committed to new automation and technology.  It helps us get parts out the door and to our customers much sooner and sets us apart from the competition.”

This requires continuous attention to the market and efforts to upgrade the company’s technological capabilities, said Leo Hickey.

“With our focus on quality and a continuous investment in the latest industry technologies, we offer our customers a complete end-to-end metal fabrication process,” he said.

These new investments in technology have helped increase Hickey’s ability to take on larger and more complex projects. “It’s translated into larger and more involved orders completed faster,” Hickey said.

Today, Hickey is nurturing the family’s fourth generation to run the company as it positions itself for future growth.

In September, the company broke ground on a 25,000-square-foot addition to its seventh building at the Salem Industrial Park and houses more than 400,000 square feet of industrial space across the seven plants.

“The enlarged plant will greatly increase our capacity and room for growth,” said Adam Hickey, vice president. “The new addition will include a state-of-the-art Trumpf 7030 12KW laser center, which can run any gauge steel up to ½ inch, completely automated,” he explained. Parts will then be fed to two automated bend cells and finished welding in Lincoln head and tail stock robot cells.

The company expects the expansion project to be completed by mid-December.

The plant expansion also creates job opportunities at Hickey Metal, he noted.

“The new building will allow us to bring on skilled labor, people who can understand drawings and programming,” Hickey said. “We will also be hiring engineers who know the 3D world and can work with advanced robotic software.”
